Small Screen

Covering the development of British independent television from its birth in 1955 to the coming of colour in the late 1960s, Small Screen focuses on the visual appearance of early commercial television. Of particular note is its useful archive of early adverts, available as Quicktime files, including the first ever British TV advert, for Gibbs SR toothpaste. Other early ITV footage includes early channel and news idents, and the specially commissioned film used to open the new broadcaster.
