The New York Public Library Digital Gallery website provides access to a selection of Japanese prints selected from the library's important collection of over 1,760 Japanese prints acquired in 1901. This selection features 56 original colour woodcuts by the Japanese painter and woodcut designer Kitagawa Utamaro. This collection of prints of the ukiyo-e school or `pictures of the floating world' as they are sometimes called feature the celebrated courtesans and individuals going about their daily lives. A number of images depict the different social classes. Each image is given its title in both Japanese and English. Clicking on individual thumbnail pictures provides a larger image, together with detailed information including provenance.
