The Victoria and Albert Museum's website provides access to this database of paintings and drawings from their collection selected to accompany their Memory Maps project. The Memory Maps project is a joint venture between the Department of Literature, Film and Theatre Studies at the University of Essex and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Designed to encourage creative writing by providing focal points of interest in the form of paintings and artefacts, it initially concentrates on images and objects in the museum`s collection relating to Essex and Suffolk. The database which comprises 117 paintings and drawings, includes works by John Constable, Kenneth Rowntree and Walter Bayes, can be searched by object type, place and date range. Clicking on any image provides the whole picture, together with a short description. The website also presents an introductory article about the Memory Maps project, written by Marina Warner.
