Poiret: King of Fashion

This website is an online companion to the exhibition Poiret: King of Fashion by the Metropolitan Museum of Art from 9th May 2007 until 5th August 2007.
Paul Poiret (1879-1944), who called himself the King of Fashion, is best remembered for freeing women from corsets and further liberating them through pantaloons. The exhibition explores “Poiret’s modernity in relation to and as an expression of the dominant discourses of the early 20th century, including Cubism, Classicism, Orientalism, Symbolism, and Primitivism”. The website contains further information about the exhibition. One can view images of dresses and coats designed by Poiret, gallery texts, an exhibition checklist and a video of curator Harold Koda explaining Paul Poiret's significant contributions to the world of fashion.
