Atoms to Patterns
The Wellcome Collection has provided this online resource to complement their exhibition `From Atoms to Patterns'. Leading Cambridge scientist, Dr Helen Megaw, instigated the Festival Pattern Group comprising X-ray crystallographers, designers and manufacturers, who produced a number of patterns based on atomic structures identified by the use of X-ray crystallography. These designs were applied to a range of objects, such as curtains, wallpapers, carpets, lace, dress fabrics, ties, plates and ashtrays, as a unique project for the Festival of Britain 1951. After fifty years in store at the Victoria and Albert Museum, this collection has now been put on display. An online gallery provides a selection of images to illustrate the story of the exhibition.
