East African Photographs

The Humphrey Winterton Collection of East African photographs is housed at Melville J. Herskovits Library of African Studies, Northwestern University. Assembled by a British collector it is a rich source of images of East Africa during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. Coverage is particularly strong in terms of portraits of contemporary Africans, depictions of social change and urbanisation in Africa and the development of European colonial administration during the period. Over 100 sample photographs from the collection can be viewed online from the website.
